I not gone thru based on Eight House (good facing direction). However, please see below for my comments:-

This is acceptable under Shapes and Form Feng Shui. (Much better than your existing situation).

Based on your second description here, option 1 is preferred. As an overhead cabinet is not favourable for two reasons:
1. It acts more like a supression (beam).
2. If one notice carefully, usually the edge or corner of the overhead cabinet may act as a poison arrow towards the body of a person.
Usually, if there are space constraints, option 1 is preferred. It would be a bonus if the direction you face is good or nice to have (under Eight House concept).

If you are a weak metal person, then yellow is a good colour. In this example, a mix of yellow and (metal - white/gold) are favourable colours for e.g. a weak metal person.
For personal self, one can see how to incorporate the colours in daily dressing. Objects placed on a table, in my opinion are less effective as they should be considered more for decoration.
