Dear Anon,
In compass readings, there is no right or wrong answers.
Often, this is a `live' subject based on the dwelling.

For example, taking a reading from the centrepoint or the flux, in my opinion, is one of the methods used, here also.
One has to remember that we are not living in the past. In the past, if one looks at all the Chinese homes, the main door is often the `facing' direction. Nowadays, many apartments, flats and bungalows often have doors at the side. And to say that standing at the door facing out to read a direction is as subjective as any other methods.
I must stress that there are many different Compass Schools of Feng Shui. I am truly not impressed by some Feng Shui Masters that claim that their method is the only correct method. This implies that these people are either ignorant of all the methods and techniques given that we live in modern times with NOT so standard dwelling layouts.
As one can see from the above, even thou Black Hat Sect is not a Traditional Feng Shui origin, it makes sense for readings to be taken from the centrepoint. Given that in an interior, optimium qi (chi) flux thru this area. And given the technique of standing at main door taking a compass direction, centrepoint has it's merits. Plus, this is exactly how, a compass template even using the Traditional Eight House is laid.
Here, many of the `myopic' Traditional Feng Shui schools, who follow rigidly to their stand at the door facing out to take compass reading is simply - too outdated.
Warmest Regards,
Cecil
