Dear Anon,
I agree with you. Why not red envelopes used.
Red envelopes are also used. However, the `disadvantage' of using red envelopes is that if one tries to write on it, especially with blue or black ink, it is pretty hard to see. (I believe this is the main reason).
Otherwise, red envelopes are acceptable.
