Dear Gwen,
Where possible, if the front door directly faces the back door, the `screen' has to be `air tight'.
Plus where possible no semi-wall to act as a hole for Qi to flow directly out.
It is still best to cover up the semi-circular hole.
This is still best, when compared to the `other alternatives' you had mentioned which I feel may not be effective. The reason is that Qi must meander gently in and I do not see the `logic' of hanging green crystals.
First of all they cannot prevent Qi to flow out to the backdoor and secondly they `cost' money.
You may have to explore,`sealing' the hole or a cheaper alternative is to use transparent plastic screw it on the back side or use plywood which is neatly cut and placed on the back side.
On money draining, you may perhaps consider doing a full Feng Shui audit, as it may reveal other `hidden' problems.
Warmest Regards,
Cecil
