Dear Jacqueline,
When one tries to apply the Five Elements concept to a sector of a room, ideally, it should be referenced with the Flying Star Theory.
This is because, the Flying Star Theory, uses the five elements to analyse each sector and the ultimate aim here is to create a balance at this sector.
Thus it does not matter if your coal fire faces north and postulate whether it takes on `fire' etc...
Warmest Regards,
Cecil
