Dear Gail,
1. Yes, it is considered inauspicious to have the front door open to steps.
2. If there is some distance between the two; then a divider or a screen could be used to neutralise this or (I am not sure how `ugly' a curtain or beads look) but the concept here is: `if it cannot be seen (stairs) it no longer poses a threat'.
3. In addition, take sometime to look out of the front door and windows to look out for any `poison arrows'.
Here poison arrows usually refer to pointed objects or an edge of a building pointed towards the front door or windows. Or it could be a lone lamp post `slicing' thru the window or door.
