Dear Jun,
The two most important considerations are:
1. Try to the entire room rectangular /square and not odd shaped. This includes the existing and new area.
2. Avoid creating missing corners or sectors for the extension.
It is best to have a top down view of the property to ensure that the house is not odd shaped.
3. If the house has a profile of a head i.e. head jutting out of the home, avoid making the `head' of the house heavy!
An illustration of an auspicious house becoming inauspicious due to a heavy `head' is as follows:-

If one makes the head of the house heavy, it is very inauspicious and can result in death of the breadwinner.
Warmest Regards,
Cecil
